‘QSARs in REACH? uses, issues and priorities’ 2011

The European Chemical Industry Council used our documentary for discussion before meeting regulators

This 2011 documentary was produced by PublicSpace as part of the current EC-FP7 ORCHESTRA project.  It is based on 20+ interviews with European regulators, industry and developers on the use of QSAR models within the 2007 EU REACH legislation.

It is intended for industry and regulators concerned with chemical toxicity.  However, we have explained the concepts in order to engage and inform non-specialists, including industry shareholders, managers, NGOs and citizens interested in the future of QSAR models in achieving one of the fundamental aims of the REACH legislation, ‘to promote alternative methods for assessing hazards of substances and to see animal testing as a last resort’.  The documentary was reviewed and approved by the participants, including the European Chemicals Agency.

The video was ambitious in being designed to work in four ways: we have used it as a looped installation in a conference booth in the major SETAC Europe conference; it has been used by the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and other organisations as a self-contained DVD; it is now online in four parts; and we have used part 2 as within conference PowerPoint presentation.

Innovative design, and the informed editing of the 20+ interviews, means the video can communicate complex issues and key perspectives effectively in minutes.  We are proud of it: it demonstrates the value of well-researched video.  It also demonstrates the expertise of the PublicSpace team in:

(i) engaging conceptually with a developing field of research,
(ii) engaging in dialogue with the key stakeholder groups,
(iii) clarifying and communicating key concepts and issues, and
(iv) using that insight to inform our interviewing, directing, filming and editing.
