Services overview: how we work
www.publicspace.ac.uk PublicSpace – Research Communication / dissemination
PublicSpace helps research teams to communicate research beyond academia, to impact on policy, practice and debate.
With years of experience in research and in helping others to write academic and professional papers, we understand the subtleties of research insight and evidence. We recognise the dangers of just simplifying and publicising research beyond academia. Our work is underpinned by insights and approaches from applied linguistics and science studies.
We work with you, rather than for you. Communicating or disseminating research involves collaboration and dialogue, to work out what is significant for policy and practice, what can be said from the evidence, and what is needed to make the research useable.

Our aim is to make the challenge of ‘maximising impact’ into something that is intellectually interesting and rewarding for the research team, and of practical value for society, economy and environment. We adhere to a public sector ethos and an ethical policy.
We give examples of our recent work and ways of working under three headings: dialogue, video and text. These three inter-related elements of research communication can create a coherent strategy or ‘pathway to impact’. We can offer these singly or in combination.
- Dialogue (including ‘knowledge exchange’) is central to communicating research. It is also vital for working out what needs to be said in a wider communication. Examples and more…
- Video can be made visually engaging and intellectually rigorous. It can transform the communication and value of research. Examples and more…
- Text, both online and in print, is a primary mode of wider communication. Text can also support video with introductory information and further resources. Examples and more…
Each page can be printed as a pdf for consideration by your team.
If would like us to work with you to engage in dialogue with particular groups about your research, and/or to disseminate it more widely, please contact us.
